Crosswalk Controversy

The article says “Pedestrians in . . . crosswalks are twice as likely to be hit as those in unmarked locations. . . .” Of course more people are hit in crosswalks; this is because that is where they cross streets.

I have found that jaywalking is absolutely the safest way to cross. In that situation the walker is in complete control. The walker can wait until there is a sure opportunity to get to the other side. In a crosswalk, even one with an electric signal, the walker is at the mercy of whatever the motorist chooses to do.

Instead of eliminating crosswalks, the police should be giving tickets to motorists who violate pedestrian rights. When did you receive or hear of anyone receiving a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian?
