A story describing a surfer village in Hawaii has won Times Travel Editor Jerry Hulse an award in the 1st Annual Travel Journalism Contest sponsored by the Hawaii Visitors Bureau.
Hulse’s article about Haleiwa on the island of Oahu was selected for honors in the HVB newspaper category. The story, which appeared in The Times Travel Section in June, 1987, described the adventures of surfers at Sunset Beach, the Bonzai Pipeline and the colorful characters of Haleiwa.
Hulse and six other winners representing newspapers, magazines and TV/video producers will be honored at a luncheon Tuesday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Entries, both from the United States and Canada, were judged by a panel headed by John Luter, chairman of the journalism department at the University of Hawaii.
