HAVE G STRING, WILL TRAVEL: Q: How...

HAVE G STRING, WILL TRAVEL: Q: How many rock guitarists does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: Too many. (Boo!) Don’t worry, there won’t be too many guitarslingers--just 12--on “Guitar Speak, Vol. 1,” a collection of axe instrumentals due out in September on I.R.S’s No Speak label. The guitar-dozen include Alvin Lee, Leslie West, Rick Derringer, Phil Manzanara, Randy California, Robbie Krieger, Steve Howe and Steve Hunter. The majority of this line-up is due to make a British concert swing later this year--with the possibility of a U.S. tour to follow. . . . Another hot guitarist--Carlos Santana--and Wayne Shorter are doing a summer tour together, and are recording a live album at the Montreux Jazz Festival this month. . . . And the grand-daddy of guitar greats, B. B. King, will be back next month with a new album, “King of the Blues 1988.” The record will feature such special guests as Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood. The first single, “Habit to Me,” is due out later this month. . . . Speaking of guitar lass Bonnie Raitt--she makes a guest appearance on the upcoming Little Feat album on a track called “I’d Hate to Lose Your Love.” The LP, titled “Let It Roll,” is due out Aug. 2. . . . And sticking with that guitar theme: Marti Jones’ new album is titled “Used Guitars.” Produced by Don Dixon, it features John Hiatt’s “The Real One,” Graham Parker’s “You Can’t Take Love for Granted” and Jackie De Shannon’s “Each Time,” plus help from Marshall Crenshaw, Mitch Easter and Janis Ian.
