Miami Police Chief Calls It Quits

MIAMI — Miami Police Chief Clarence Dickson, who served while the most massive police corruption scandal in city history unfolded, ended his 28-year career today with a final blast at the City Commission. “I didn’t want to be working for the commission anymore,” Dickson said as he announced his retirement. “They didn’t like me, and I’m not crazy about them.”

Dickson, the city’s first black police chief, was praised for providing the beleaguered department with dignity and integrity at the top. Since 1985, more than 80 officers or former officers have been arrested or suspended. Many of the officers were accused of ripping off drug dealers and selling their cocaine.
