Brooklyn’s Coney Island beaches were reopened after tests showed a massive sewage spill posed no threat to bathers, but Staten Island beaches remained closed because medical waste continued to wash ashore. Parks Department Commissioner Henry Stern said he lifted the ban on swimming at Coney Island, Brighton and Manhattan beaches following reports from the New York Health Department that tests of water samples showed no harmful bacteria.
