Local News in Brief : Hot Line for Employers
- Share via
The Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund announced Thursday that it will start a campaign to help employers understand their obligations under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
The campaign, funded by a $50,000 grant from the James Irvine Foundation, will include seminars, conferences and a statewide hot line for employers unwilling or unable to contact the Immigration and Naturalization Service for the answers they need, said MALDEF President and general counsel Antonia Hernandez at a press conference in Los Angeles.
The hot line, (213) 629-2731, will operate weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
“Many employers are uncertain of their rights and responsibilities,” Hernandez said. “The Employer Education Project will . . . help avoid employer misunderstanding. Our ultimate goal is to limit discrimination.”
Employers who knowingly hire undocumented workers or who fail to properly identify work authorization may face civil and criminal penalties.
