Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Cable Firm Ordered to Cut Rate 25% as Penalty

The city’s cable television provider has been ordered to cut its rates by 25% for failing to promptly answer customers’ telephone calls.

Multivision, which has about 30,000 subscribers under an exclusive city franchise, has until Wednesday to appeal the order, according to D. Patrick Denny, a city spokesman.

Company officials have said they will appeal the July 5 decision.

Under Multivision’s contract with the city, the company must answer an average of 98% of callers within two minutes. City officials said the company has had problems meeting that service level since it received the contract in December, 1986. The city has warned the company three times to improve its response, Denny said.

In the past three months, the company has only answered an average of 66% of its calls within two minutes, according to the city.

“We want them to do a better job,” Denny said. “This kind of hardball is a symbol that this is something we’re very concerned about.”

Multivision’s basic subscription rate, now $19.95 a month, has doubled over the past year, according to figures supplied by city officials.
