KPCC-FM Says New Radio Transmitter Is a Success, Expanding Its Signal Range

KPCC-FM, Pasadena City College’s nonprofit community radio station known for its popular Big Band Era programming, has moved its transmitter from the college to Mt. Wilson, expanding its signal to reach areas from San Diego to the San Fernando Valley.
After weeks of testing, the first broadcast was Monday and the response was overwhelming, said Beth Cooper, the station’s traffic and information director.
“We got calls from people in San Diego, Catalina, Ventura and the San Fernando Valley,” Cooper said. “They said they were happy to finally hear us. It was mainly older people who don’t seem to get enough of swing music.”
KPCC-FM (89.3) airs Big Band swingers from the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s, including Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Harry James, Woody Herman and Duke Ellington, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. After 3 p.m. and on weekends, the station carries news and information shows, ethnic programs and celebrity interviews.
Station officials estimated that the new signal will triple its audience. Ironically, Cooper said, cities close to KPCC-FM in the San Gabriel Valley are now having trouble picking up the station. But she noted that they also can hear the station over some local cable outlets.
