THE STRIKE

Locked in a 19-week impasse with striking writers, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has approved a 6-month postponement of new contract negotiations with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Faced with the specter of dealing with two separate but simultaneous work stoppages, the producers agreed to a postponement proposal from Al DiTolla, president of the 24,000-man industry craft union, that would put off negotiations until September. But two other industry labor unions, the Teamsters Local 399 and the Basic Crafts Union, voted to continue their negotiations with the producers separately from IATSE.
