U.S. Gymnastics Championships : Hayden Wins Two Individual Titles; Mills Takes Floor

HOUSTON — Men’s all-around champion Dan Hayden won two individual titles and women’s champion Phoebe Mills repeated her crowd-pleasing floor routine in the individual championships Sunday at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships.
Mills, of Houston, and Hayden, of Amherst, N.Y., won all-around titles Saturday night and will lead the men’s and women’s teams into the U.S. Olympic trials Aug. 4-7 at Salt Lake City.
Hayden won the rings and shared the gold medal on the parallel bars with Kevin Davis of Nebraska Sunday.
Davis, second to Hayden in the men’s all-around competition, and Hayden each had 9.8 scores in parallel bars.
Mills once again played to the home crowd of 13,312 in the Summit, winning the floor.
Hayden won the rings with a 9.85 performance, beating Bob Gauthier of Brigham Young University, who was second at 9.575.
Hayden, who earned a spot on the men’s national team for the sixth straight year Saturday, placed fifth in floor exercise.
Mills led a strong contingent from Houston’s Karolyi Gym in winning individual titles.
Bela Karolyi’s athletes won three of the four titles, losing only in the balance beam, won by Oklahoma’s Kelly Garrison-Steves with a 9.875 performance.
