Grewal Is Whiskey Creek Race Winner

MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. — Professional cyclist Alexi Grewal of Boulder, Colo., who had worn the leader’s jersey since Thursday, won the Whiskey Creek Stage Race Sunday in a time of 9 hours 10 minutes 32 seconds.
Grewal had an overall lead of 1:35 going into the final stage of the five-stage race, the 50-lap, 30-mile criterium, and simply needed to finish to clinch the overall title. He was 13th in the 100-rider final stage.
Alan McCormack of Boulder, Colo., won the criterium in a final-lap sprint over 1984 Olympic gold medalist Steve Hegg of Dana Point. Both finished in 1:10:09.
Scott Moninger of Boulder, Colo., finished second overall, with a time of 9:12:02.
Sue Ehlers of Solana Beach was overall winner in the three-stage women’s competition with a time of 3:53:39. Maureen Manley of Thousand Oaks won the women’s 20-lap criterium in 32:15.
