Italian Michele Alboreto, who leaves Ferrari next season to make room for Nigel Mansell, won the provisional pole position for Sunday’s British Formula One Grand Prix.
He lapped the 2.969-mile Silverstone circuit in 1 minute 10.669 seconds in a qualifying session cut short by rain, edging his teammate Gerhard Berger. Alboreto’s average speed was 151.246 m.p.h.
McLaren driver Ayrton Senna was third with a time of 1:10.787, followed by teammate Alain Prost in 1:11.550.
