A man who was shot by a deputy marshal after refusing to drop a knife he was brandishing outside a courthouse was sentenced Friday to three years’ probation.

Superior Court Judge Bernard Revak also imposed a $200 fine on Royal Broten, 39, of San Diego, who had pleaded no contest to interfering with an officer.

The charge was reduced to a misdemeanor by Revak, who also dismissed a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

Broten was shot by Deputy Marshal James McCain in front of the Family Court Services building in downtown San Diego on March 18 when he did not respond to an order to drop the knife.

It was the first shooting by a marshal in the department’s 50-year history.

Broten served nearly six months in jail after the shooting before he was able to post bond.
