County Fair Kicks Off Horse Events

July has become--unofficially, that is--the month of the horse in Orange County. And starting with this weekend’s big-bang equestrian events at the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa, there are competitions for almost every kind of equestrian interest continuing throughout the summer.
More than 200 entries are expected to saddle up today and Sunday at the fairground for the Western horse show.
Pam Gimple, manager of the equestrian center at the fairground, said a popular event is today’s miniature horse show.
“Miniature horses are smaller than ponies,” said Gimple. “They generally range between 20 inches and can be as tall as 50 inches (at the withers).”
More horseplay--featuring such breeds as Morgans, Andalusians and Tennessee Walkers--continues at the fairground through July 17. Those who want a closer look at various breeds of horses may tour the equestrian center barns.
General admission to the fair is $4 (adults and children over 12); $2 (children 6 to 12); free for children 5 and younger. There is no additional charge to view the equestrian events.
