SPOTLIGHT: WEST NEWPORT BEACH

Location: This narrow sandy beach stretches for 2.2 miles in Newport Beach, from the Santa Ana River channel southeast to Newport Pier.
Facilities: Shops and restaurants are near Newport Pier, the oldest pier on the Southern California coast. On the beach nearby are volleyball nets and fire pits (first come, first served), outdoor showers and an oceanfront boardwalk with a marked bicycle path. Also, the Newport Dory Fishing Fleet returns daily at 9:30 a.m. to sell its catch on the beach north of the pier. Restrooms and lifeguard services are provided along the length of the beach.
West Newport Park, one block inland from the beach at 58th Street, has grassy areas, playgrounds, tennis and racquetball courts. Another playground on the beach is in front of Newport Harbor Elementary School, between 13th and 14th streets.

Activities: Fishing is popular from the pier, and several tackle shops are nearby. Surfing is also popular, but hours and locations are regulated.

Parking: Metered parking is available in a lot near the pier, along Balboa Boulevard and on other streets next to the beach.
