The embezzlement, fraud and tax evasion trial of former UC Santa Barbara Chancellor Robert Huttenback and his wife, Freda, went to the jury after a defense lawyer contended in closing arguments that Huttenback spent university funds on his home to better serve the university, and the prosecution claimed he illegally spent the money “to avoid any tax consequences.†The prosecution charged that the Huttenbacks spent about $250,000 in university funds for improvements on their home and for personal property.
