About 250 gallons of sewage seeped into two popular recreation areas Thursday, San Diego health officials said.

In the first incident, nearly 150 gallons of sewage spilled onto the beach near La Jolla Hermosa Park at about 10:15 a.m. after a sewer line in the 5600 block of Bird Rock Avenue became clogged with grease and rocks, said a spokeswoman for the county Department of Health Services. The overflow was stopped 45 minutes later.

A stretch of beach about 150 feet long was closed by health officials and will reopen this afternoon.

In the second incident, 100 gallons of sewage seeped into Mission Bay, polluting waters 100 yards north of the Ski Beach boat-launching ramps. The overflow, traced to a sewer line on Ingraham Street, prompted health officials to close that area as well.

Officials said they will conduct sampling in Mission Bay to determine when the water will again be safe.

Warning signs were posted in both spill areas.
