Colorado Riders Sweep Whiskey Creek Opener

The Whiskey Creek Stage Race, a five-part bicycle race that draws world-class riders to Mammoth Lakes in the Eastern Sierra, began Wednesday with a six-mile hill climb.

Top finishers were Todd Gogulski, of Boulder, Colo., who won in 17 minutes 42.44 seconds; Tim Rutherford of Snowmass, Colo., who was second in 17:54.94, and Doug Smith, of Boulder, who was third in 17:55.88.

Today’s second stage will be a 92-mile road race by a field that includes Olympians Steve Hegg, Thurlow Rogers and Alexi Grewal, who will compete for $50,000 in prize money.
