Local News in Brief : San Fernando Council Backs Light-Rail Route
The San Fernando City Council unanimously endorsed a proposal by former Rep. Bobbi Fiedler to build a light-rail line that parallels San Fernando Road from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles to Sylmar.
Fiedler, who is a member of the Citizens Advisory Panel on Transportation Solutions, presented the proposal to the council Monday night. She argued that the idea “makes great logical sense†because such a line would cross communities where large numbers of people are dependent on public transportation.
The 32-member citizens committee was appointed by the Los Angeles City Council to decide on a San Fernando Valley light-rail line that would have widespread public support. It has until Aug. 1 to recommend a route to the council, which will then recommend a route to the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission.
The San Fernando Road route is one of four being considered by the committee. In a preliminary ballot recently, members favored it second to a route along Chandler and Victory boulevards from North Hollywood to Warner Center.
