Azusa : Protesters Get Doused
A group of Azusa residents trying to close the Azusa Rock Co. quarry in Fish Canyon above the city is steaming because a water truck that wets down dust at the quarry hosed some of its members last week while they were inspecting the site.
The Committee to Save the Foothills, along with the city of Duarte, is lobbying the Azusa Planning Commission to revoke the quarry’s 32-year-old operating permit. The Planning Commission began hearings on the matter in April.
Azusa Rock President Tom Sheedy said the watering incident was apparently inadvertent and apologized for it at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
“I hope it was an accident, and I do intend to find out what happened,†he said.
But committee member Linda Stahl-Smith said the shower was deliberate.
“It was very, very intentional, the way they sprayed us several times,†she said.
