A new page in perestroika was turned Wednesday when the management of the Soviet magazine In the World of Books announced it would start serializing the New Testament in its pages--a first for the officially atheistic Soviet media. Commented Soviet Bible expert Sergei S. Averintzev, who is working on footnotes for the biblical excerpts: “At first, I was shaken by such an indecency, but then I thought, it’s good.†But not completely high-minded, it turns out. In a lecture at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Averintzev said said the magazine wanted to print the New Testament “to enlarge its circulation.â€
