Effects of Proposition 13
For people like myself who bought our homes in the early ‘60s and watched our real estate taxes skyrocket each year to the point that many people in this category had to sell because they couldn’t pay the taxes, Proposition 13 was a godsend.
What about retired people who have their homes paid for and because of Proposition 13, can live at home and could not afford the skyrocketing rents?
We people who have our homes under Proposition 13 recognize that we pay less real estate taxes than some of our neighbors who bought after 1978; however we have to assume that the people who bought after Proposition 13 knew what the tax rates would be when they bought their homes. Further if those people think it’s unfair then why don’t they put forth their own proposition and get their taxes reduced?
