Japan and the United States signed a farm trade agreement reached June 20 that over time will dismantle Tokyo’s quotas on imports of beef, oranges and orange juice. Japanese Ambassador Nobuo Matsunaga and U.S. Trade Representative Clayton K. Yeutter exchanged letters to implement the accord, which ends a 20-year trade dispute. Yeutter repeated his claim that the pact will eventually increase annual U.S. export sales of beef, oranges and orange juice by more than $1 billion. Japan agreed to lift quotas on beef and oranges in 1991, and on orange juice in 1992.
