A robber fatally shot a 28-year-old Canoga Park man Thursday in an attempted robbery on the back steps of a Tarzana bank, police said.
The victim, who was not identified pending notification of his relatives, was about to walk into the Wells Fargo Bank at 18750 Ventura Blvd. about 2:30 p.m. when a man leaving the bank confronted him, Police Lt. Jim Watters said.
The men struggled, and the would-be robber shot the victim at least twice at close range with a pistol, Watters said.
Nothing was stolen from the victim, who was found near an automatic teller machine clutching money and a deposit slip, Detective Phil Quartararo said.
Investigators said the man drove away in a stolen car that was later found two blocks away.
The victim died at AMI Tarzana Regional Medical Center about 45 minutes after the incident.
