Bush Sees Desire for Change
NEW YORK — Vice President George Bush said today that after eight years of Republican rule in the White House “some good people yearn for a change†and that’s why the GOP ticket faces an uphill struggle.
“It’s our job to let them know that this time, in this case, change and improvement come from the Republican Party,†Bush said in remarks to a GOP fund-raising luncheon. Referring to polls showing him in a tough race against Democrat Michael S. Dukakis, Bush said, “It’s an uphill fight for our Republican team this year.†He compared himself to former President Harry S. Truman, noting that Democrat Truman was the underdog when he ran in 1948.
