Israel’s former United Nations ambassador, Binyamin Netanyahu, outpolled all rivals as the dominant Herut wing of the rightist Likud Bloc held first round elections to select its list of candidates for November’s scheduled Israeli national elections. Binyamin Begin, son of former Prime Minister Menachem Begin, finished third, putting both newcomers in a strong position for senior posts in any new Likud-led government. As party leader, Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir did not have to stand in the party’s internal elections. The rival Labor Party of Foreign Minister Shimon Peres chose its own candidates two weeks ago.
