Sad to say, as much as I admire Liza Minnelli as a performer, her “Triple Play” special was almost as embarrassing as her recent theatrical ventures. Minnelli and John Rubinstein strained so hard to make something out of their musical number (about a ferocious mutt, no less) that my heart sank for both of them. And the romantic segment with Louis Gossett Jr. was a pathetic piece of pseudo old-fashioned whimsy. ABC should have bought the rights to “Liza With a Z” and broadcast that instead.
