Considering that more than half of American households now have VCRs and that the Los Angeles area has such well-stocked video stores, you’d think the local TV stations would seriously reconsider their movie programming practices. How many people will watch even a “classic” film with a dozen interruptions and “editing for television” if they can rent a tape of the same thing made from a studio “reference print” for 99 cents? Local stations and the cable networks should concentrate on showing those hundreds of great films that are not available at the local video store and thereby increase their ratings by providing something that is available nowhere else.
