Brian Mulligan, assistant basketball coach at Capistrano Valley High School the past three seasons, has been named varsity coach at Orange Glen High in Escondido, replacing Dana Ernest.
Mulligan, 27, was a varsity assistant under Mark Thornton and freshman coach at Capistrano Valley after he graduated from UC Irvine, where his father, Bill, is the head coach.
Last season, Orange Glen finished 0-12 in the Palomar League and was 5-19 overall. Mulligan will begin teaching at Orange Glen in the fall and will coach the team through the summer while maintaining his residence in San Clemente.
Roger Holmes, assistant basketball coach at Ocean View for nine seasons, has been named a varsity assistant under Coach Rich Schaaf at Santa Margarita.
Holmes, 27, coached freshman, sophomore and junior varsity teams for seven years and was an assistant under the varsity coach, Jim Harris, for two years. Holmes’ teams won five league titles, and the Seahawks were 49-8 in the two years Holmes was a varsity assistant.
Santa Margarita, a second-year school with only freshman and sophomore classes, will join the Olympic League next season and play a varsity schedule.
