Eight people have taken out applications to succeed Richard E. Longshore as the Republican nominee in the 72nd Assembly District. Longshore, 62, died of pneumonia June 8, the day after he won the GOP primary for the seat he has held since 1986.
Longshore’s death has touched off a scramble among Republicans seeking to face Democrat Christian (Rick) Hierbach, an Anaheim resident, in the November general election.
Applications have been taken out by Brian Bennett, a Garden Grove resident and chief of staff for Rep. Robert K. Dornan, (R-Garden Grove); Scott Hart, also of Garden Grove who is the Orange County field representative for Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.); George Heaney of Santa Ana, and longtime GOP activist Virgel Nickell of Westminster.
Also Ken Nunn of Santa Ana; Curt Pringle, president of the Garden Grove Republican Assembly; Dewey Wiles, a Westminster resident and member of the Midway City Sanitation District, and Dan McNerney, whose background was not immediately available.
The application deadline is 5 p.m. Monday at Republican headquarters in Orange. The 64-member Orange County Republican Central Committee is expected to select a nominee by mid-July.
