An often confusing, surprising and ultimately exciting 1987-88 NBA season befittingly came to an end with an often confusing, surprising and ultimately exciting contest in the seventh and decisive game of the championship series tonight here at the Forum.
The Los Angeles Lakers, attempting to make good on a promise made by Coach Pat Riley more than a year ago, to become the first team in 19 seasons to repeat as champions, lost most of a 15-point fourth-quarter lead but hung on to defeat the Detroit Pistons, 108-105, for their second consecutive NBA title and fifth since 1980.
