U.S., Soviets Entered in Volleyball Tournament
The U.S. national men’s volleyball team will compete in the four-team Stubbies USA Cup beginning tonight at the Forum. It will be the U.S. team’s last competition in North America before the Olympics.
The United States won the four previous USA Cups, most recently last year in the Forum. It is ranked No. 1 in the world, with the Soviet Union No. 2, France No. 4 and Japan No. 6. Fourteen of the 15 U.S. players, 12 of whom will make the Olympic team, are from Southern California.
Tonight, the United States will play Japan at 7 p.m., and the Soviet Union will play France at 9. Play will resume Friday night with the United States playing the Soviet Union at 7 and France playing Japan at 9. Saturday, Japan plays the Soviet Union at 5 p.m. and the United States meets France at 7. The competition will conclude Sunday, with the consolation final at 5 and the championship at 7.
