Hanford-area residents oppose a controversial coal-fired co-generation plant to be built in the Central California city by a 32-1 margin, according to an unofficial poll. A readers’ poll by the Hanford Sentinel showed that 1,156 residents oppose the plant and only 36 support it. Respondents identifying themselves as Hanford residents voted 892 to 30 against the plant; those living outside the area voted 265 to 6 against it. “It was by far the highest level of response, and showed the most lopsided final result, of any survey ever conducted by the newspaper,†wrote Sentinel Managing Editor Paul C. Merz. The City Council supported the burner by a 3-2 vote last March.
