Local News in Brief : RTD Strike Vote Set
Southern California Rapid Transit District bus drivers have scheduled a strike vote for Thursday, although if a walkout occurs it could be weeks or months away.
A spokesman for the 5,000-member United Transportation Union confirmed that the vote will be taken Thursday, one week before the current contract expires. But if no agreement is reached by July 1, Gov. George Deukmejian can delay a strike and extend bargaining until Sept. 1.
Negotiations have been under way for about two months with little progress on major issues such as pay hikes, contracting out services to private firms and controlling driver absenteeism.
