Just so long as the curators at the Tate didn’t buy from two Britons and a Cypriot. The three were arrested after trying to sell 12 paintings stolen from an English duke, West German detectives said Tuesday. The paintings were among 22 taken from the duke’s London villa April 20, according to the Baden-Wurttemburg state Criminal Investigation Office. The total value of the stolen goods was estimated at $570,000. An office spokesman declined to identify the duke, citing West German police policy of not naming victims of most crimes.
