Billy Martin, New York Yankee manager, had his first showdown with Bob Quinn, the club’s new general manager, when Martin held catcher Don Slaught out of the lineup.

Martin vowed not to use players who are not healthy, and Slaught had just returned to the roster from the 21-day disabled list. Quinn wanted him in the lineup, Martin said.

Earlier this month, Quinn took over for Lou Piniella, who managed the Yankees last year and was named GM after the season but asked to be reassigned within the organization.

While dressing for batting practice in Tiger Stadium at Detroit, Slaught told Martin he wasn’t ready to play.

Martin sent the catcher out to run. When Slaught returned, he told Martin he couldn’t cut or turn sharply while rounding the bases.
