Mayne and Hamelin Are Cut From Roster of U.S. Olympic Team
Catcher Brent Mayne of Cal State Fullerton and infielder Bobby Hamelin of Rancho Santiago College failed to survive Monday’s third-round cut and were sent home by coaches of the U.S. Olympic baseball team at Millington, Tenn.
Another cut was expected today to put the team’s active roster at 25, said Bob Bensch, a team spokesman.
Mayne, a sophomore, had a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn.- and school-record 38-game hitting streak and helped the Titans reach the semifinals of the College World Series.
Hamelin, also a sophomore, hit .521 with a state-record 31 home runs and 105 RBIs for the state runner-up Dons. Hamelin, who was Kansas City’s second-round pick in the major league baseball draft, will report to the Royals’ Class-A team in Eugene, Ore.
The U.S. team is training at Millington, a small town near Memphis, and is scheduled to leave Wednesday for a five-game series in Japan.
The training camp opened June 13 with 41 players, and the roster must be cut to 20 for the Olympics in Seoul.
