The United States said today it is continuing diplomatic relations with Haiti’s new military government and indicated that no retaliation was expected following a coup.

Although the State Department has condemned the overthrow of civilian President Leslie F. Manigat by Lt. Gen. Henri Namphy, “at this point, there is no break in diplomatic relations (and) we’re not contemplating it,†spokeswoman Phyllis Oakley said. She did not give a direct answer when asked by reporters if the United States would formally recognize Namphy’s government. But she did not rule out working with the country’s new military rulers.
