Military engineering students practicing how to blow up roads set off an explosion at a demolition range Monday that killed six of the soldiers and injured three others, officials said.

“They were training on how to create craters--big holes in the road to hinder movement of vehiclesâ€-- when the blast occurred at a Canadian military base 80 miles east of Vancouver, said Capt. Mark Perron, a spokesman at the British Columbia base.

Perron said 29 military field engineering students and seven instructors were training at the Chilliwack base’s demolition range with C-4 plastic explosives when an explosion ripped through the range. An inquiry was ordered.
