E. German Soldier Hits Comrade, Then Defects

HANOVER, West Germany — An East German soldier beat up a fellow private and then defected to the West German state of Lower Saxony by climbing border fortifications, border police said on Monday.
A spokesman said the 20-year-old private knocked the other soldier down and disarmed him, then climbed over a border fence in the Harz Mountains.
