The Christian Lebanese Forces militia foiled an attempt to kill its leader, Samir Geagea, and other top officials with a car bomb, Christian security sources said. It was the second attempt in a month on the life of Geagea, a staunch opponent of Syria’s role in Lebanon. The sources said the plot was masterminded by followers of former Lebanese Forces chief Elie Hobeika, ousted by Geagea in 1986 for signing a Syrian-sponsored peace pact to end Lebanon’s civil war. One security source said militiamen stormed a garage in a Beirut suburb and arrested four men who were packing a car with explosives.
