Egyptian police thwarted an Iranian-financed attempt to topple the government and install an Islamic regime inspired by Iran’s spiritual leader, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Middle East News Agency reported in Cairo. Nineteen of 29 suspects have been arrested, and the rest are being sought. The group reportedly planned assassinations and bombings and maintained contacts with the Iranian intelligence service and the radical Shia Muslim Hezbollah (Party of God) in Lebanon. Egypt and Iran have no formal diplomatic ties.
