WASHINGTON — President Reagan today hailed Italy’s willingness to accept 72 U.S. fighter jets that Spain is evicting, telling Premier Ciriaco De Mita that it demonstrates Italy’s commitment to the NATO alliance.
“Without Italy’s courage, determination and support throughout INF deployment and negotiations, there would have been no treaty,” Reagan told De Mita after the two held talks at the White House. At a departure ceremony, Reagan said, “We will continue to depend, and gratefully so, on Italy’s support as an ally, and advice as a friend.”
