CBS dealt its legendary former anchor and current “special correspondent” a blow this week when it rejected Walter Cronkite’s proposal to anchor a prime-time special report this fall on the 25th anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy. According to sources associated with the project, Cronkite’s proposition was made in an effort to find a more meaningful role at CBS. “I thought it was a pretty good idea, and I still think it is a good idea,” Cronkite told the New York Times this week before departing on a monthlong trip overseas. Negotiations between Cronkite and the network are ongoing.
