PURCHASE, N.Y. — Johnny Miller, the 1973 U.S. Open champion, failed to make this year’s field when he shot a 146 Tuesday in 36-hole sectional qualifying.
Miller, whose final-round 63 at Oakmont brought him from behind to win in 1973, shot 71 and 75 in rounds at Old Oaks Country Club and Century Country Club and missed the cut by two strokes.
Miller joined 1960 Open champion Arnold Palmer among the former winners who did not make this year’s Open. Palmer failed to qualify at Orlando, Fla., on Monday.
