Fearless and Travel Free

Anyone who is a true travel devotee could not help but agree with Peter Greenberg in “Override Wimpy Fears†(May 8). It had not even occurred to me that people would be canceling travel plans because of the Kuwaiti airline hijacking.

But then I’m the one who flew into the Athens airport for a glorious Grecian vacation in June, 1985. I also was the only American on a wonderful tour through Spain (including the Basque lands) in the summer of ’86. And last summer I enjoyed a tremendous South American experience that began in Peru, despite State Department warnings against travel there.

Why do people deprive themselves because of some fantastic nightmare of terrorism? One is much more likely to be killed by a drunk driver, a heart attack, cancer or some other unfair quirk of fate. The rewards of travel should not be sacrificed to the god of unreasonable fear.
