Save in New Zealand
Air New Zealand, through its HotPac Tours subsidiary, is offering a variety of Magic Season discounts to New Zealand during the May 1-Sept. 30 off-season.
A round-trip ticket on Air New Zealand to New Zealand is required for eligibility for the discounts.
Arrangements can be made through travel agents, but a carrier spokeswoman said the air tickets and HotPac discount vouchers have to be issued by Air New Zealand.
One key discount program enables you to buy vouchers for five nights’ accommodations on a double occupancy basis for $39. The vouchers are good at more than 25 THC/Southern Pacific Hotel Corp. or Quality Inns properties at major sightseeing attractions on the South and North islands of New Zealand.
The vouchers don’t have to be used on consecutive nights. You can make subsequent reservations in New Zealand, but it’s advisable to make your first night’s booking while still in the United States.
Additional nights are available at $36 per person a night, which is still less than the rack (regular) rate. But you have to set up any additional nights before departure.
Another option is to buy an accommodation pass for $29 that’s good for seven nights on a double-occupancy basis at 98 Motor Lodges of New Zealand.
These vouchers also don’t have to be used on consecutive nights; reservations are made in advance or as you travel. Additional nights, which have to be set up in the United States, are $22 per person.
A 12-day motor home/camper package can be bought for $29. These Maui Campers sleep two adults and have automatic transmission. There are no extra charges for more than two people in the campers.
Buying a round-trip Air New Zealand ticket through Mount Cook Line, a company providing air and land travel in New Zealand, also provides a choice of two other Magic Season specials: a 30-day air pass for $409 permits unlimited flights plus vouchers for seven nights’ accommodations at Best Western properties, and a seven-night coach pass for $139 offers unlimited motor-coach travel as well as rooms at Best Western properties for the same number of nights. There are also 10-, 15- and 25-day versions of this program.
Mount Cook Line also offers its own set of air and land passes, which have to be bought in the United States but allow you to fly to New Zealand on any airline.
