Horse Racing Roundup : Do So Edges Pattern Step in Honeymoon
Do So battled for the lead down the stretch and beat Pattern Step by a nose in the $131,900 Honeymoon Handicap at Hollywood Park Saturday.
It was the fourth victory of the day for jockey Alex Solis and the second straight win on the Hollywood Park turf course for Do So, a 3-year-old daughter of Nodouble.
Do So, with 118 pounds, was timed in 1:41 1/5 for the 1 1/16 miles and paid $8, $3.60 and $2.40. She won $75,400 for owner Jack Kent Cooke, bringing her career earnings to $185,275.
Pattern Step, with Chris McCarron and 119 pounds, paid $3.20 and $2.40. A half-length back was favored Jeanne Jones, with Bill Shoemaker and 120 pounds, who paid $2.40.
Solis’ other winners were Franc Prince in the second, Mountain Ghost in the fourth and Vegas Eagle in the sixth.
Proper Reality overpowered Dee Lance heading into the stretch turn and went on to win the $535,000 Illinois Derby by 4 lengths at Sportsman’s Park.
Jim’s Orbit took second in the 1 1/8-mile race, 6 lengths ahead of Classic Account.
Dee Lance, Dalmatian Prince and Batty completed the field of six in that order, in the 31st running of Chicago’s richest race for 3-year-olds.
Dee Lance, ridden by Ricky Frazier, quickly went to the front. The horse led by 10 lengths after half a mile and by the same margin after 6 furlongs before beginning to tire.
The winner, who was timed in 1:50 2/5, paid $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10. The colt earned $321,000 with the fifth victory in seven starts this year to boost his career total to $750,820.
The son of In Reality had previously won the Arkansas Derby and finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby.
Jim’s Orbit, ridden by Shane Romero, paid $3.20 and $2.40. Classic Account returned $2.20 to show.
Favored Diminuendo, ridden by Steve Cauthen, scored a 4-length victory in the $280,000 Gold Seal Oaks for fillies at Epsom, England.
With her main rival, Dabaweyaa, struggling at the back of the 12-horse field, Diminuendo, a 7-4 choice, pulled away in the stretch. Diminuendo had finished third in the recent English 1,000 Guineas.
Sudden Love, an 11-2 shot, was second. French-trained Animatrice, a 20-1 shot, finished third in the 1 1/2-mile race.
Cauthen followed the pace set by Atropa, rated a 500-1 shot, and Sunday Sport Star, a 200-1 shot. However, with 3 furlongs to go, Cauthen moved his 3-year-old into the lead with a quick burst of speed.
