At PCBC : Gold Nuggets Honor ‘Best in the West’ Projects

A Wilshire Boulevard commercial project and homes in Santa Ana, San Diego and Scottsdale, Ariz., won top honors in the 25th anniversary Gold Nugget Award ceremonies at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference, symbolizing the “Best in the West†in design and land use planning for residential and commercial construction.

The winners were selected from 750 entries from 14 western states by a 12-member jury and, according to Allen Jaffe of San Diego, awards chairman, “will become the trends that sweep east to capture the imagination of architects, builders and buyers alike.â€

The detached home of the year honors were shared by the K S E Development Co., builder of the Cantera homes in Santa Ana, designed by McHale/Woods Associates, and The Fifth Green at the Boulders homes, Plan 2, in the Arizona city, built by Malouf Brothers Development Co., Inc., and designed by Berkus Group Architects.

Halcyon Del Mar, Plan 4, built in San Diego by Recreactions of California Inc., and designed by Naegle & Associates/Jamie Stark, project architect, won the attached home of the year award.

The 1-million-square-foot Wilshire Courtyard, built by J.H. Snyder Co. and California Federal Savings & Loan, was selected as the best commercial project of the year. McLarand, Vasquez & Partners Inc. was the architect for the five- and six-story, pedestrian-scaled design, a landmark in the newly revitalized Miracle Mile area.

The same team won another grand award, for best commercial/industrial or mixed-use site plan, for its Water Garden project in Santa Monica.

One of four special judges’ grand awards was presented to the Private Art Gallery, in Santa Barbara, designed by Berkus Group Architects. Judges “recognized (it) as a perfect combination of texture and technology presented in a truly art form that becomes a sculpture on the landscape.â€

The Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa garnered a grand award for “most innovative commercial, industrial or institutional project or concept,†designed by the architectural firm of CRSS Inc.
