Interviews With Dukakis, Jackson
In the intensive interview with Dukakis, reference is made to the fiscal mess which the next President will inherit. Dukakis refers also to some possible solutions such as making major cuts to start reducing the deficit. I wonder if the internal study ordered by Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci, recently released and mentioned in the same issue of The Times, might not be immediately applicable. By eliminating some 7,300 jobs from its worldwide operation, the Pentagon could save some $300 million a year. That would be an impressive beginning and I hope that the key congressional leaders will take it into serious consideration.
